ABOUT ANAMCARA

MEANING

'Anamcara' is a word of Gaelic origin, meaning 'friend of the soul', or 'soul friend'.

Drawing from the experience of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, the  Anam Cara ( or Anamcara) in the Celtic tradition, was a person, either male or female, living a life of solitude and silence, either as a secluded hermit or within a community on the one hand, and with the gift for engaging and life-giving friendship on the other. She or he would walk with you throughout life, committed to your interior development. Truth, honesty, affection and  a fierce love for your soul's well-being were constantly cultivated.

INTENTION

Being deeply seen and heard for who you are, beyond the layers of conditioning and culture, deep in your core, nowadays is fairly rare.

Being afforded the space to figure out and trust your unique way to grow, transform and embody what is sacred in you - and hear your soul conversing with you as you do so -is like finding a treasure.

Finding a compassionate and trustworthy guide and companion to accompany you along the way, a person who is committed to your growth and soul's unfolding with as much commitment, honesty, courage and compassion with which she/he walks his or her own path is an immense gift of grace.

ANAMCARA OFFERS THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF ALL THREE:

- seeing and hearing;

- space and time;

- compassionate guidance and soul wisdom

This can go a long way in bridging the gap between your physical, human life and the more hidden yet more fundamental and meaningful  life of your soul.

FORMAT

The original spirit and role of the Anamcara have now, here, been developed into both a space and a vehicle.

A SPACE  to explore and befriend more fully the life you hold within, being on an inner journey and discover the intertwining of being both human and divine.

A VEHICLE to  hear how  your soul is calling you: calling you to drop the act, to live more nakedly, to let go of what binds you to a false sense of aliveness and identity, to be connected to your truth, creatively and meaningfully,  to surrender to WHAT IS and recover, or rediscover, what is most sacred to you and in you.

THEMES AND FOCUS

Many questions and themes are turned into conversations and workshops:

What does it take to live from the inside out and from a place of surrender to the Unknown?

What does it mean to embody this experience within your specific gender and social context, your family background, personal relationships and spiritual tradition?

What role does the body play in, and how is it  impacted by, the intense and sometimes lengthy process of interior transformation ?

How can pain, symptoms and illness be  cries of your soul begging to be heard?

What is, truly, the Dark Night of the Soul and how do you open to its profound, and at times, ferocious work of recreating you into a Sacred New Human?

How can creativity become the threads that weave themselves into the inner fabric of our lives?

The above questions and themes  may seem vast to you. They are. Yet  they can hardly begin to articulate the height and the depth and the infinite spaces you, and I, and all of us, carry within ourselves.

TOOLS

Art, poetry, writing, connection to the language of the body, creativity and the creative process are fundamental elements of soulful, spiritual living; exploring yourself through stories and myths, the language of the psyche and the ancient voice of spiritual mysticism, breath-work and movement are some of the important pillars sustaining the work being developed here.

Engaging us through events,  circumstances and relationships, is how Life works with all of us.

If you believe  individual change to be the foundation of collective change, then recognizing the treasures caked in the mud of discomfort and difficulty, in the uncertainty of transitions and change, in the grief of loss and trauma - and learning to surrender your own ways to the compelling work of the unknown - may really be the greatest gift you can give to yourself, to your loved ones, your community and to the world at large.
